Veterans Benefits for Those Exposed to Toxic Chemicals in Camp Lejeune Water
As Many as One Million People May Have Been Exposed, Including Veterans and Their Family Members.
For decades, the military allowed carcinogens and other pollutants to reach and become embedded in the groundwater at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Established in 1942, the base itself has served as home to thousands of military personnel and their family members, as well as independent contractors working and living at the base.
In the 1980’s, the United States government discovered that there were dangerous chemical compounds within the groundwater at Camp Lejeune.
This would mean that for over 30 years, more than a million people (soldiers, their family members, civilians, employees) all drank and bathed in this contaminated water.
There has been a significant amount of scientific research made available that points to the association between exposure to this water and the contaminants found within it, and the development of certain types of cancers and diseases.
Many officials do believe that the contamination at Camp Lejeune is one of, if not the most devastating water contamination cases in the history of our country.
To respond and hopefully mitigate the situation, the Department of Veterans Affairs has established presumptive service connection and cost-free health care for the service members who qualify — anyone exposed to the contaminants from Camp Lejeune between August 1st, 1953 and December 31st, 1987.
Unfortunately, albeit a grand gesture on their behalf, these benefits often fall short of providing both service members and their families with an equal amount of compensation in relation to what they’ve been through.
Hopefully, the Camp Lejeune Justice Act of 2022 can work to actively help these victims and their families due to the ability to now bring a claim against the government.

What Were the Contaminants at Camp Lejeune?
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are the chemicals that which caused the contamination at Camp Lejeune.
Two main VOCs were initially identified in Camp Lejeune’s water supply, a dry cleaning solvent, and a degreaser.
Later studies showed that there were upwards of 70 other chemicals inside of the water that caused health risks.
The most prevalent and health-hazardous contaminants found were:
• Trichloroethylene.
• Perchloroethylene.
• Benzene.
• Toluene.
• Vinyl Chloride.
• Other Contaminants.
Trichloroethylene and Perchloroethylene
Studies have found that both TCE and PCE can raise the risk of several cancers, including kidney and liver cancers and some support for Hodgkin’s disease and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
There’s also been several links found between both cervical cancer and exposure to TCE.
Some data does also suggest that there are associations between TCE exposure and multiple myeloma and prostate cancer, laryngeal, and colon cancers.
Benzene
Benzene is a known carcinogen, as it promotes both acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), as well as multiple myeloma and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Toluene
There have been various studies conducted of the workers exposed to toluene which show that there is an increase in cancer of the lung, breast, esophagus, stomach, colon, and rectum.
In addition, increases in both lymphosarcoma, lympholeukaemia, as well as an influx in Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma have been reported in workers exposed to toluene.
Vinyl Chloride
Much like with burn pit exposure, being exposed to vinyl chloride can cause up to five times higher rates of liver cancer, angiosarcoma, and lung cancer.
Other Contaminants
The above toxins were measured and found to be in the highest quantities within the water at Camp Lejeune, however, many other toxins were also measured and found to be highly carcinogenic.
Those are, but may not be limited to the following:heavy metals, pesticides, and assorted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
Is The Water at Camp Lejeune Still Contaminated?
As per the United States Marine Corps, the water at Camp Lejeune is safe to drink today.
The water supply around the base has been been routinely checked every 90 days, and has been found to be contaminate free since March of 1987.
